Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science at the University of South Bohemia was founded in 1991. Until July 31, 2007, it was called the Faculty of Biology. It was established by the Academic Senate of the University of South Bohemia, which had been founded shortly before. Scientists from the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences helped to create the faculty. This centre had been set up in České Budějovice before 1989 to move some scientists from Prague who were not welcome there. The first teaching took place in buildings of the Czech Academy of Sciences, but today the faculty has three buildings of its own. Still, it closely cooperates with local institutes of the Academy. Some teachers work at both the faculty and the Academy.
At the Faculty of Science, students can choose from single-subject or combined study programs. The faculty also offers multi-subject teacher training programs for future high school teachers, as well as professionally oriented programs such as Biomedical Laboratory Technician or Environmental Care. These programs prepare students for work in clinical laboratories or nature protection. A special option is cross-border study in cooperation with Johannes Kepler University in Linz, in the field of Biochemistry.
Our faculty provides high-quality language education. Besides English, students can also study German, Spanish, French, and other languages. Language teaching focuses mainly on using the language in scientific and professional settings.
During their studies, students can take part in field courses in special environments, such as the High Arctic at our research station in Svalbard, or in the tropics of Papua New Guinea at the Binatang field station. Another unique part of the faculty is the Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Paleoecology, which connects natural sciences with the humanities.
