Department of Botany

About

About

The Department of Botany is responsible for the Master’s and PhD study programmes in Botany and provides courses and research supervision for students with a focus on botany in Bachelor’s programmes. The department also coordinates the interdepartmental English-taught Master’s programme Ecology. The main research areas cover Algology, Archaeobotany, Population and Community Ecology, Mycology including Lichenology, Plant Systematics, and Vegetation and Restoration Ecology.

Research is conducted both in the field and in laboratories, either directly at the department or in collaboration with various institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad, especially the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Třeboň. Research projects combine traditional approaches with the latest methods. Strong emphasis is placed on detailed knowledge of the studied organisms (cyanobacteria and algae, fungi and lichens, bryophytes, and vascular plants), together with the use of modern molecular-genetic methods, imaging techniques, and high-quality statistical data analysis. Some projects are closely connected with nature conservation practice.
