Scholarships

You don’t have to pay for everything yourself while studying at our faculty. We offer different kinds of scholarships to help you. You can get support if you have good grades, want to study abroad, need help because of your family situation or travel a long way to school.

You can also get money for your research – for your bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD project. There are two types of research grants: one from our faculty (called SGA), and one from the whole university (called GA JU). These grants can also give you a scholarship.

Check what support you can get – and don’t be afraid to apply!

Here you can find an overview of the scholarships. More detailed information is in the Dean’s Directive No. D79 about how scholarships are given. Information about PhD student scholarships is in the Dean’s Directive No. D58.

Junior Scholarships (Premium Scholarships for Talented Applicants)

The scholarship is intended for talented applicants to study at the Faculty of Science USB. Applicants may apply if they are seeking admission based on the defense of an independent scientific project at the faculty, or if they have placed 1st to 5th in the national round of a natural science Olympiad or in the national round of the Student Professional Activities (SOČ) competition. The scholarship is awarded to a maximum of three selected applicants and includes: 15,000 CZK as a premium scholarship (a reward) and 15,000 CZK to support a research project the applicant will begin working on as a student at FSc USB.

The premium scholarship is paid during the student’s first semester of study. The research project funding is provided once the student starts working on the project at one of the departments of FSc USB. Written applications for the scholarship (in the form of a letter) should be submitted to the Study Department of FSc USB. They may be sent together with the application for admission or separately after the application has been submitted.

Accommodation Scholarship

Students are eligible for the accommodation scholarship if they meet the following conditions:

  • they are in a full-time bachelor's, follow-up master’s, or doctoral degree program,

  • they have not yet exceeded the standard length of study at the given level at any university,

  • they have permanent residence outside the district of their place of study (usually outside the České Budějovice district).

It does not matter whether the student lives in a dormitory, private rental, or commutes.

Detailed information about the conditions and how to apply for the scholarship can be found here on the USB website.

Social Scholarship

Students are eligible for a social scholarship if they meet the criteria for receiving child allowance, meaning that the decisive family income assessed for the allowance does not exceed 1.5 times the family’s subsistence minimum. The scholarship amounts to 4,730 CZK per month and is granted for the standard period of study, covering ten months of the academic year, starting from January 1, 2024. Detailed information on how to apply for this scholarship can be found here on the USB website (in Czech only).

Excellence Scholarship

Excellence (merit-based) scholarships are awarded from the 3rd semester of bachelor’s or master’s studies until the end of the standard period of study, provided that the student has a cumulative weighted average of 1.20 or better, has successfully completed all enrolled courses, and has earned at least 60 credits over the previous two semesters. The scholarship is granted automatically once per year, after the completion of a full academic year. The amount of the scholarship is 2,000 CZK per month.

More information can be found in Dean’s Regulation No. D79 on the Awarding of Scholarships.

Regular Scholarships for Doctoral Students

Scholarships for students in doctoral study programs are specified in Dean’s Regulation D58. Information about other forms of financial support for doctoral students can be found here in the Doctoral Student Information section.

Doctoral Mobility

Presenting results at international conferences and participating in foreign internships are among the obligations of doctoral students at the Faculty of Science at the USB. The faculty supports these activities through extraordinary scholarships awarded as part of the team projects funded by GA JU (students, please consult with the principal investigators of GA JU projects) or through mobility support scholarships from the development project (the call for applications for the following year takes place every summer; additional available spots are filled continuously from the waiting list – interested students should contact the Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies).

Erasmus+

The program aims to support the mobility of students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students have the opportunity to study at a foreign university or undertake a work internship at a company, training or research center, or another organization. The stay can last from 2 to 12 months. More detailed information regarding the selection process at the Faculty of Science can be found in the Important Dates section here.

SGA

The purpose of the Student Grant Agency (SGA) is to support projects by bachelor’s and master’s students at the Faculty of Science at the USB. Projects may or may not be related to the topic of the student’s bachelor’s or master’s thesis. Financial support of up to 30,000 CZK can be requested for a single project. Only students who will be enrolled full-time for the entire calendar year namely, first- and second-year bachelor’s students and – first-year master’s students – are eligible to submit a project. The grant can be used to cover research activities, including travel expenses and a stipend.

The application deadline is at the end of November. Complete information can be found here.

GA JU

The Grant Agency of the University of South Bohemia supports students in two ways:

a) As members of team projects (submitted by a JU employee, but at least half of the team must consist of students). These projects last three years, and students may be exchanged during the project period. The project allows funding for research activities, including travel expenses, as well as regular and extraordinary stipends. Students must be in a standard length of master’s or doctoral program.

b) As principal investigators of individual projects (submitted by the student), which are usually focused on research activities carried out by full-time doctoral students within the standard period of study. The duration of individual projects is one or two years.

The application deadline is mid-October. Complete information can be found here.
