Matthew Walls: Pikialasorsuaq as a Coupled Inuit-Environmental System

You are warmly invited to a lecture by Matthew Walls, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary, taking place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 16:00 in lecture room B1, Building B, Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia. Matt Walls specializes in Arctic cultural and environmental heritage. His lecture, titled Pikialasorsuaq as a Coupled Inuit-Environmental System: The Need to Align Cultural and Environmental Histories in a Changing North draws on archaeological and ethnographic research from the Qaanaaq region. It explores how Inughuit knowledge and environmental governance have sustained the North Water Polynya for over 4,400 years. Rather than viewing the Arctic as a pristine wilderness, the lecture reframes it as an engineered and resilient landscape shaped by Indigenous stewardship and ecological knowledge.
