Information for PhD students

Thesis Advisory Committees (TAC)

The Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) is a supportive advisory body designed to enhance the quality of doctoral training and to support PhD candidates throughout their studies at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia.

Each PhD candidate is supported by a TAC composed of the supervisor and additional experts who provide independent feedback on the research project, study progress, and career development. TAC meetings are held once per semesterand serve as a structured opportunity to discuss achievements, challenges, risks, and future plans.

The TAC system is:

  • mandatory for PhD students entering their doctoral programme after January 2026, and
  • optional for PhD students enrolled before January 2026.

TACs complement the role of supervisors and Specialist Boards; they are advisory, not controlling bodies.

Student FAQ – Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)

What is a TAC and why do I need it?

The TAC is a small group of experts who support you during your PhD. It provides independent feedback on your project, progress, and plans, helps you identify risks early, and offers advice beyond the perspective of your supervisor.

Do I have to have a TAC?

Yes, if you start your PhD after January 2026, the TAC is mandatory.
If you enrolled before January 2026, participation is voluntary, but strongly recommended.

Who will be on my TAC?

Your TAC includes your supervisor and at least two additional experts who are not from your supervisor’s research group. At least one member should be external to FSc USB. You propose the members together with your supervisor to the Board of Specilaists.

How often will TAC meetings take place and how long are they?

TAC meetings take place once per semester. A typical meeting lasts about 60–90 minutes and can be held in person or online.

What do I need to prepare for a TAC meeting?

Before the meeting, you submit a short written overview of your project or progress and give a brief presentation. After the meeting, a TAC Assessment Report is completed and uploaded to STAG. The TAC provides recommendations, not grades.
