About the programme

The main objectives of the proposed study programme are 1) to build on the knowledge of students achieved in their undergraduate studies and to further expand it in the field of modern biological research at the theoretical and practical level and 2) to prepare and increase the competitiveness of our graduates for future careers in applied research and development in the industrial, agricultural, clinical or service sectors (e.g. in the pharmaceutical or biotechnological industry or clinical diagnostics) and for positions in academic research (e.g. by continuing doctoral studies at our or other universities). Graduates of the programme will acquire advanced skills and knowledge in omics methods and genetic engineering and will be able to use or even develop bioinformatics tools for the analysis of big biological data. Studies in the new programme will be conducted entirely in English, which will increase the international competitiveness of its graduates and the attractiveness of the programme for international students. Students will thus be educated in an international and multidisciplinary environment that will better reflect the realities of the world of work in an increasingly globalised and integrated world economy. Emphasis will be placed on encouraging independent scholarly work and independent critical thinking in experimentally oriented qualifying papers that will stand up to rigorous peer review and can be the basis for scholarly publications.

Programme structure

The rules and conditions for the creation of study plans are specified in the document "Rules of the Quality Assurance System for Educational, Creative and Related Activities and Internal Quality Assessment of Educational, Creative and Related Activities of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice" and the related Measure of the Rector of the University of South Bohemia No R361. This document characterises the Study Programme Council, which is established for each study programme, its members are academic staff of the departments involved in the teaching of the programme, students and representatives of employers. The task of this council is to ensure the quality of the study programme, to submit suggestions for possible improvements in the teaching of individual courses and for adjustments to the curricula. These are then approved by the Faculty Curriculum Council, which is made up of the guarantors of individual study programmes.
The ECTS system is used to express the study load. During the follow-up Master's studies, the student receives a total of 120 credits, 75 credits of which are for compulsory courses of the common core. The remaining credits are divided between compulsory and compulsory elective subjects of the specialisation and elective subjects.

  • The motivation for the creation of the new study programme is to enhance the career prospects of our graduates by adapting their education to the changing demands of the global labour market, which is particularly related to the implementation of rapidly developing new technologies. These technologies increasingly require graduates to be proficient in performing and analysing experiments generating large datasets and metadata and to be able to translate their knowledge into meaningful biological results based on a high level of theoretical knowledge. In addition to pursuing an academic career in doctoral studies, graduates can expect to find employment in the commercial sector, e.g. as technicians or R&D specialists in the pharmaceutical, agricultural or biotechnology industries, and in similar positions in clinical diagnostics or forensics..

How to apply

Candidates who have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in general biology or a biomedically or biochemically oriented Bachelor's degree programme at the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia (e.g. Biology, Biomedical Laboratory Technology or Biological Chemistry) may be admitted to the proposed follow-up Master's degree programme "Functional Genetics and Bioinformatics". Further conditions for admission to the study will be specified in the relevant Decision on Admission Conditions. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree from another faculty of JU or another university will be admitted on the basis of an interview before the Admissions Committee. The interview will verify whether their education is sufficient for the follow-up Master's degree or whether they need to supplement their education in a particular field.
