Department of Botany

For Students

Thesis Opportunities

We offer supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s as well as Doctoral theses with a focus on botany. Our research covers various groups of organisms traditionally studied within botany (plants, algae, fungi, and lichens), as well as their ecological interactions with animals and soil organisms. Topics range from systematics, taxonomy, and evolution to theoretical studies of ecological interactions and applied research, including projects focused on education and teaching. Students can choose between fieldwork and laboratory-based projects; research often combines both approaches. Current thesis topics can be found on the webpages of individual research groups.

Teaching

At the Bachelor’s level, the department provides courses focused on botany as well as courses such as biostatistics. The department is responsible for these courses.
At the Master’s level, the department runs the Botany programme and, in cooperation with the Department of Zoology and the Department of Ecosystem Biology, the English-taught programme Ecology. In the winter semester of odd-numbered years, we organize the Quantitative Ecology Module – a block of courses taught in English that enables international students, usually within the Erasmus programme, to study at our department.

Field Trips and Seminars

The department organizes weekend botanical field trips for students and the public; their schedule can now be found in the news section of this webpage. We also organize a number of field courses for students, some jointly with other departments.
Department seminars take place in the meeting room of the Botany Villa on Wednesdays at 15:00. The programme for the upcoming semester will be announced in the news section of this webpage.
