A Blooming Campus: When Plant Choice Matters

Late spring and early summer are when the campus of the Faculty of Science begins to bloom—not only with daisies, but with a vibrant mix of native wildflowers. In front of Building A, a flowering strip was established two years ago using a regional seed mix from the Šumava area. This colorful meadow attracts pollinators and delights passersby alike.

The strip was created on an area of bare soil left behind after construction work. Thanks to the use of native plant species, the space has been transformed into a biologically valuable habitat. Regional seeds are the best choice for supporting invertebrate biodiversity, preserving local genetic diversity, and serving as a practical educational tool for students of botany and ecology.

Did you know that seeds used in many commercially available wildflower mixes are often imported from thousands of kilometers away—from places like New Zealand or Africa? Using local and regional seeds is not only far more sustainable, but also much gentler on the natural environment.
