A Hot Expedition in the Heart of Senegal
Research in Niokolo-Koba National Park is ongoing. An international team led by Tereza Majerovičová (LAPE University of South Bohemia and from the Institute of Archaeology USB) and Idrissa Manka (Department of History, Université Cheikh Anta Diop) travelled to southeastern Senegal to collect new ethnobotanical and ethnoarchaeological data on plant use, beekeeping, and traditional medicine, alongside dendroecological data.
This year, the team was joined by Charlie Le Moyne from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, focusing on edible plants and the use of wild grasses. The dendroecological component of the research was carried out in collaboration with Jan Altman (Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences) and Václav Bažant (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague). A new feature of this year’s expedition is the deployment of newly installed dendrometers.
The expedition was supported by the Erasmus+ programme. In addition to scientific work, the team also encountered local wildlife – and with the dry season now at its peak, the expedition has quite literally been a hot one.
