New publications in Czech Polar Reports by CPE members
Three new papers from the Centre for Polar Ecology (CPE) have been published in the latest special issue of Czech Polar Reports.
Jan Kavan analyzes changes in the natural environment of central Svalbard since the end of the Little Ice Age (the last ~120 years), focusing primarily on glacial retreat and the subsequent environmental transformations. https://journals.muni.cz/CPR/article/view/42695
In the second paper, Martin Lulák and Jan Kavan demonstrate how thousands-of-years-old whale remains can be used to reconstruct past marine transgressions. Using central Svalbard as a case study, they show that the total marine area in this region has decreased by 33% over the last 10,000 years. https://journals.muni.cz/CPR/article/view/42698
The third article, co-authored by Josef Elster, describes the working culture collection at the Institute of Botany of the CAS in Třeboň. As of June 2025, the collection maintains 350 strains of cyanobacteria and microalgae from cold regions (primarily Antarctica and the Arctic). This unique resource is used for experimental purposes and includes samples from glaciers and terrestrial habitats. https://journals.muni.cz/CPR/article/view/42701/34898
