The garden of the Faculty of Science was established in 2014 as a place for both education and recreation. It is situated behind Building B and C and was built with effort of many volunteers from our students and employees. You can find there communal compost, tables and benches to study or have lunch in peace, table tennis and bouldering wall, but also various small wildlife biomes. The most prominent is an artificial sand dune, which is home of many rare insect species. The dune is accessible only from gradual side, the steep sides are prone to erosion. Next to the dune, there is a small pond, which is home to various amphibians and invertebrates. The flowering meadow is an important habitat for pollinator insects.
The compost can be used by any faculty members for organic waste from kitchen, garden or experiments. Please, get informed about what belongs here and mainly avoid disposing non-decomposable waste.
Questions: Klára Řehounková (
A unique project managed by the Restoration Ecology group. It hosts rare plants and insects which are bound to declining natural sand habitats. The dune is accessible only from the side with shallow slope. Little disturbances are allowed (and mostly welcome), but deep digging or disturbance of the steep side harms the habitat.
Near the compost and student vegetable patches stands a small monument featuring a bronze apple core, dedicated to Jára Cimrman, the famous fictional Czech genius and discoverer. According to local lore, he dropped the apple core here, thereby establishing the tradition of composting - one of his many world-changing discoveries.
A little lake was built near the sand dune to support local biodiversity.
Wooden arbour was built by students and teacher of the faculty at a carpenter course led by Robert Malý.
The insect hotel was established and is maintained by Jan Erhart from the Parasitology Institute BC.
The vegetable patches can be used by studnents and employees of the Faculty of Science to grow their own vegetables or other plants, especially those living in dormitory or the neighbouring blocks of flats. The places for individual people are assigned in early spring by Majka Šmilauerová and Klára Řehounková, whom you should contact with your claims. Please, do not harvest vegetable grown by others.
The dry stone walls are a habitat for small animals
You can use the bouldering wall (as well as other sport equipment). It was established and is managed by Oldřich Nedvěd.
