Improving the Faculty’s Outdoor Classroom

The faculty garden is used not only for relaxation by students and staff, but also for outdoor teaching. During field exercises, we regularly bring students here to explore plants and animals from a variety of habitats – from the wettest littoral zones to dry, sandy environments. To better showcase well-preserved, species-rich meadows, we took advantage of the ground disturbances caused by recent construction work and reseeded the affected areas together with our students. We used a regional seed mix consisting exclusively of flowering broad-leaved herbs native to the Czech flora, sourced from the foothills of the Šumava region and produced by the Czech Union for Nature Conservation – Šumava, based in Vimperk. Its origin is therefore truly local, making it the closest match to the vegetation found in a typical Czech meadow. We'll see whether the first wildflowers appear this summer.
