What’s in the Water? Investigating UV Filters in Canadian Aquatic Environments
UV filters (UVFs) are widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. These compounds are toxic to aquatic life, act as endocrine disruptors, and are banned in marine areas like Hawaii and Florida. Despite their widespread use, there is no freshwater monitoring data for UVFs in Canada. This lecture will present new findings from Canadian outdoor pools, wastewater, beaches, and experimental systems, helping us better understand the environmental fate, persistence, and risks of UVFs to both ecosystems and human health.
